Most organisations are not ready for day-to-day AI

McKinsey's State of Organizations 2026 finds widespread AI deployment but weak readiness for day-to-day use. Leaders face a double transformation: technology and how the organisation actually works.

What it means for leaders

  • Pilots and tools are not enough. Day-to-day readiness needs ownership, operating model and change capability.
  • Barriers are as much organisational and ethical as technical. Treat change management as core delivery work.
  • Without a clear C-level owner, AI stays fragmented across functions and never becomes a system of work.

What to do on Monday

Start here: Confirm a single accountable executive owner for AI in operations, in writing; replace "number of pilots" with one operational outcome the board can see this month.

  1. Map one end-to-end workflow where AI is meant to change outcomes, and redesign the human steps around it.
  2. List the top three adoption barriers for your context (trust, regulation, silos) and assign owners this month.
